A gang of gunmen broke into a music video shoot and raped eight young female cast members in a small South African town this week, police said on Friday.
Security forces have arrested three of some 20 suspects so far for Thursday’s attack on the outskirts of Krugersdorp, a small town west of Johannesburg, Police Minister Bheki Cele said.
The gang attacked the crew and cast as they unloaded equipment and prepared the set, he told reporters.
The women ranged in age from 18 to 35, Cele said, adding that one woman was raped by 10 men and another by eight.
Even the men were stripped naked and stripped of their belongings, he told reporters on the sidelines of a ruling party conference in Johannesburg.
“They look like foreign nationals, basically they are zama zamas,” he said, referring to people who are illegally mining in the country.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said at the same conference that he had ordered the police minister to ensure the perpetrators were “apprehended and dealt with”.
Rape is vastly under-reported in South Africa, but on average one such crime is reported to police every 12 minutes in the country.
