The Johannesburg Metro Police Department said it would open an internal investigation after one of their branded patrol vehicles was stolen by suspects in Senaoane, Soweto, on Sunday evening.
Spokesman Wayne Minnaar said the suspects left with the car after three police officers stopped to investigate a complaint about a tent that had been erected in the middle of a road.
When officers got out of the car to speak to residents, he said the suspects jumped inside the vehicle and drove away.
âWe spent about two to three hours looking for him in Soweto and managed to get him using a tracking device.
âThe right front and rear wheels were damaged as well as the front bumper. It looks like they smashed it somewhere, kept driving and only gave it up after realizing the tire was out. flat.

“A file for vehicle theft and vandalism was opened at Moroka police station. Fingerprints, along with other information, were taken,” Minnaar said.
While the circumstances that led to the theft of the vehicle were still being collected, Minnaar explained that the engine could not be turned off when the vehicle’s blue light was on.
